The leader is a planner.

A leader is a natural born planner. Most people who lead others have a natural and innate capacity to foresee problems and make contingency plans for any issues that might arise. Even if plans may not turn out according to the desired result, a good project manager can create an alternative that is still congruent to the group’s goals.

The leader is a visionary.

A leader provides the guiding path or goals for the rest of the group to focus on. With a clear goal in mind, the team’s energies are not dissipated uselessly which can yield minimal gain with maximum effort. A vision is also closely associated to the plan, but the plan is the ‘how,’ while the vision is the goal.

The leader knows how to influence others; in a good way.

The leader is naturally persuasive. This person should be able to make people understand their sentiments in order to make them see the correct path, whether it be their idea or not! Possessing this skill does not necessarily mean that everything should be done according to exactly how the leader wants it. Being able to influence would also include the ability to empathize and listen to the issues that some of your Team members may be having. Teamwork is beneficial because as the saying goes, ‘two minds are better than one’! Different minds lead to different ideas. It is a learned leadership skill to keep the peace and choose the best path for the entire team to follow.

The leader knows how to take charge.

When all the planning is done, the leader is the first person to make the implementation. He or she makes the clock and puts everyone on their feet. While sometimes the leader can be very strict and demanding, in the end, the fruits of his or her effort and that of their team members will be obvious and well worth it.

The leader leads by example.

A great leader knows that being a role model for his or her team members to follow is imperative. They must show an example of discipline by always going to work on time. Doing the opposite will have a dire effect on the entire team’s success. He or she should be the first person to show up and the last person to leave. Whatever action the members of upper management do can have a huge impact on their subordinates.

The traits outlined above are some of the basic requisites for anyone who wants to be a leader. Traits like being a planner, being a visionary, being influential, taking charge, and leading by example are some of the more specific traits that you can follow if you want to be a leader. What is interesting about these traits is that they can also be applied in all aspects of life, causing them to be even more beneficial to acquire.

The book begins with a short introduction that explains a bit about the book and who it is for. It then goes into chapter one which describes just what social media is. This is a great introduction regarding the explosion of sites now called social media and how the communities formed. Chapter two delves into RSS feeds and readers, Blogs, and how to get ready for social media.

Next, in chapter three, the authors provide a lot more information about blogging and interacting with blogs that others write. The fourth chapter focuses on netiquette, or as the others say, Miss Manners for the Web. I thought this was a very important chapter, because if you don’t follow the acceptable rules of social behavior on the Internet, your efforts at marketing will surely fail.

Chapter five focuses on devising your pitch, while the next chapter shows you how to measure your success and monitor the Web. The authors provide a lot of useful resources and tools that you will be able to use. The next couple of chapters discuss the risks involved with social media and damage control in the digital age.

The next chapters focus on some of the most popular social media sites and how a person can use them for marketing purposes. These chapters are great for people that have not used these sites yet, and the authors help you understand how they fit in an overall marketing strategy. Even if you are familiar with these sites and using them, there is good information in these chapters. They include: Does MySpace Still Matter?, Understanding Facebook, Video Marketing with YouTube and Other Video Sharing Sites, The Twitter Revolution, and The Power of Crowds: Understanding and Participating in Online Communities.

There is a lot of information in this text. After reading it, I’ll now go back and use different parts of the book depending on what I’m working on. I also like the philosophy the authors put in the book, because I agree with them that this philosophy will be important regardless of how the social media sites and programs change and evolve. The authors also provide a short recommended reading list of books, blogs and websites.

In times like these I remember when I was a little girl and my mother took me to Manhattan’s Marble Collegiate Church to hear the Reverend Norman Vincent Peale talk about The Power of Positive Thinking.

He was amazing but I hadn’t thought of him in years, not until we all began to feel the pinch of a terrible economy.

Small business owners, like me, blanch at the word Recession. Some of us panic. Some cut prices, cut staff. Thanks to Reverend Peale, I prefer to think about positive approaches. I start by remembering that we have a choice:

1.We can pack up our tents and go home, or

2. We can try something new.

We always pick #2.

1. I’m making myself accountable first, accountable myself to work on my next book, be more creative (in all elements of their business) for our clients and learn new things.

2. As soon as I find myself working on a new creative program, I start having fun. For some odd reason, I think about Tom Dixon, the Blendtec CEO whose “Will it blend?” videos usually go viral. In this one, he purees an iPad and it’s had over 12 millions views.
Great storytelling and that’s always made for effective marketing.

3. Your network can be golden for you. If you’re on LinkedIn, keep in touch with people you’ve worked with in the past, former clients, friends, relatives and people in your groups. I reach out to several people every day to see if I can be a resource for them. I help people find new posit/ions, mention them in a post, or ask about their families. Networking is easy on Facebook and Twitter, too. It helps if you remember this: Don’t just ask for something, offer something.

4. Your strategy is your Game Plan for new business. So, figure out the best ways you might be able to reach the companies you want to work with, and then write it down. I’ve found personal, first class mail to be very effective in generating new business, especially in industries in which we have a lot of experience, like finance, publishing automotive and tourism.

(Sometimes, I wish our new prospects had a little more experience. We recently presented a program idea to a bank, and asked them the value of an average new customer. They didn’t know and so they had no idea how much they can afford to spend to get X number of new customers.)

5. The important thing is to take action! Get out of your comfort zone and do new things. It’s fruitless to keep doing what you’ve always done if it’s stopped working.

6. And, surround yourself with the best people you can afford. Hard times call for the best, the smartest, most positive people you can find.

Stay positive yourself by doing something nice for yourself every day.

Plenty of tools are sprinkled throughout the book, and you’ll want to take advantage of these because most of them are free, but you’ll find a nice list at the end of the book that includes all of the essential tools you need to be using now.

What I liked most about this book is that you didn’t have to read every word to understand what you needed to do. In fact, I think this book was made to be skimmed as much as read, making it easy for you to get started quickly.

I also liked that he included the tools throughout the book, as you would need them, and you have a wide variety of tools you can use, as well as most of them being free. What made this book more helpful than “Twitter Power,” is that it helped me to focus on my overall marketing strategy, as well as this piece of the puzzle, not just one strategy.

Highly recommended for those who want to integrate Twitter into their marketing plans.

“Social Networking for Business: Choosing the Right Tools and Resources to Fit Your Needs” by Rawn Shah is a book for businesses or organizations that are looking to make an on-line community to play a role in their business. An example would be Amazon’s reviewing community. This book does not discuss writing reviews, but rather what kind of community would benefit different kinds of businesses and organizations.

This book is much more theory than practical steps. It shows a business how to look at trends, define the social experience it wants to provide to the community it creates, the different human factors involved when building a culture and deeper collaborative relationships, different kinds of leadership for the various communities, and what is needed to manage and measure the collaborative project.

The book is quite technical, and again, a lot of theory, and as such, it is a bit dry. I found that it had no practical applications for my smaller businesses. However, I did find the book interesting in an academic way. It was good to learn about the various social environments and how they can be used by businesses. With that said, this book really was not written for me and other small business owners looking to market with Social Networking. That’s what I thought it was going to be with the title. I was wrong. It is more about creating social networking platforms within your business. And even then, it discusses the social and community aspects, not the nuts and bolts and technical aspects of doing this.

If you are in a business or organization and are tasked with executing a social computing project, this book will assist you in the planning of such a project. The book really is for community managers or developers. If you want to use sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and so on to market with social networking you will want to find another book. It’s a good book for its specific market.

Here are my five suggestions for getting that running start:

1) Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall
We often look to the successes of others and judge ourselves too harshly based on that, based on decades of internalized self-doubt and insecurity. Yes, we all benefit from mentors, guides, coaches, and role models. But nobody finds themselves or discovers new confidence and esteem by looking into someone else’s mirror or calculating their own worth based on somebody else’s yardstick. Change the negative voices in your head to encouraging ones that cheer you on and you’ll become a well-rounded winner in every aspect of your personal and professional life.

2) Success is a Journey, not a Jaunt
Unlike Bradley Cooper’s character in the movie “Limitless” we don’t become successful by taking the magical pill. Success happens in steps, increments, stages, and phases. Success is about forward momentum, and that’s a process – not an acute event. Career momentum doesn’t begin when a vacancy opens at the top any more than seeing the destination on a map means you have arrived. You have to evaluate where you are and then make an intentional journey.

3) Negotiating Traffic in the Fast Lane
While traveling your career journey use your rearview mirror to reflect upon your prior experiences and learn lessons from the past, but don’t fixate on them. The side mirrors help you check your current reality – and keep an eye on the competition racing alongside you. But remember that the whole point is to keep your momentum going forward. Don’t fixate on road hazards, speed bumps, and detours. You have to be extremely clear about where you want your career to go, but also decide what sacrifices you are willing to make to get there. No successful person ever got there without sacrifice.
